User interfaces are no longer confined to screens on devices in this day and age. With the world achieving substantial leaps in redefining user experiences, interfaces are being integrated into our day-to-day lives. Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) has been making this possible and promises a future where interfaces are hyper-personalized to match the audiences’ needs.

The seventh episode of the TechSagar EmergingTech Webinar Series focused on driving vital discussions on key trends and ideas set to shape HCI in 2022 and beyond. An esteemed panel deliberated on how HCI is rapidly changing the way businesses are interacting with their consumers and delivering unparalleled user experiences across devices.

The distinguished panelists to lead the webinar included Dr. Abhinav Dhall, Assistant Professor, IIT Ropar, Dr. Jainendra Shukla, Assistant Professor, IIIT Delhi, Amitesh Bharti, General Manager & Head of HMI Center of Excellence, BGSW with Sumit Bhattacharjee, Director – Technical, Data Security Council of India as the moderator.

Sumit Bhattacharjee set the context  by stating how the invention of the first touch screen mobile phone paved way for the rapid growth and development of HCI.

He highlighted how the increase in demand for human interactive devices can be found in different industries today and deliberated on how this will shape the business landscape enormously in the coming years. As industries and leading tech companies come up with designs and products to incorporate HCI for social good it will be fascinating to witness how this branch of knowledge will help strengthen the cybersecurity landscape.

As the webinar proceeded onward, the panelists drove engaging discussions on the government’s role in HCI, enterprises and users’ preferences have shifted towards metaverse, Web 3.0, AR/VR, etc. Some major key takeaways of this webinar are;

-HCI lies at the intersection of computer science, design and social science; by broadly touching upon all three aspects.

-Web 3.0 will provide a better livelihood simply because data creation is going to be easier with different enablers, multilingual platforms.

-The semantic web essentially predicted to emerge from Natural Language Processing (NPL) is going to be a major cornerstone of Web 3.0.

-As Metaverse evolves and digital evolution ripens, more and more synthetic data will be generated.

-HCI is not just about interaction, rather it is more about the collaboration effort. Robots and humans are coming together to solve bigger problems and the government is planning initiatives to empower this collaborating and working interaction.

-AR/VR or UI/UX are all getting immensely evolved in -AR/VR or UI/UX are all getting immensely evolved in all areas of business be it education, healthcare, automotive or manufacturing sectors.

Dr. Abhinav Dhall, Assistant Professor, IIT Ropar, highlighted trust as a key factor to encourage  people to use metaverse and carry out more online transactions. This can drive investment from both the city and industry sides to these multi-modal security solutions.

The metaverse is based on the fact that all experiences are experiences, be they real or virtual. This makes it very important to have emotionally intelligent AI/VR that can help blur the lines between real and virtual experiences.

Dr. Jainendra Shukla, Assistant Professor, IIIT-Delhi, spoke on how traditionally, interaction with robots was isolated at a certain point of time as it was not very adaptive. Now, efforts are being made to make machines not only intelligent but emotionally intelligent as well by giving them social intelligence abilities.

As physical and digital converge, the way we interact with them has to converge too. HCI makes this possible. “The metaverse is a virtual world looking like an actual world. To have this happen you should have a connected network, and this platform has to merge. Then only the metaverse can seamlessly be used as a concept and as a platform in any industry.” – Amitesh Bharti, General Manager and Head of HMI Centre of Excellence, BGSW. He added that machines are no longer just an interface for humans, they have become companions, and that is where this technology is eventually leading to.

The webinar dwelled on how human-computer interaction has evolved over the years, beginning from the first touchscreen to the metaverse today, and is only expected to mature in the future. HCI is also playing a key role in ensuring data security, privacy, and zero fraud in digital identity. The webinar deep dived into the secrets of how HCI is set to empower user experiences in a metaverse world as we see it today and where we’re headed.
